Someone who had to leave high school before getting their diploma can earn their GED by passing the GED exam.

Many test-takers have problems with the math section of the exam. The Mathematics portion of the GED exam tests the numerical ability of test takers, covering basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis (e.g. statistics).

This is considered by many to be the most difficult part of the GED test, though that is attributable to the widespread aversion many people have towards math in general.
